The Field Processor is designed as part of the STREAMS system to provide local processing and control of field devices. The standard field processor is a DIN rail mounted model. Specific housing needs (e.g. rack mounted) are available. Note: and The STREAMS Field Processor cannot be designed, purchased or used as a separate device. Using a service-device driver architectural model, the STREAMS Field Processor interfaces internet protocol (IP) and serially connected field devices (e.g. variable message signs, intersection controllers) to the STREAMS system. The STREAMS field processor is also designed for situations requiring field devices quickly change state when triggered by local field device stimuli. For example, the field processor can display a message on a steep grade warning sign when a heavy vehicle is detected with very little latency. On-site or remote management of the field processor uses the field network to which it is connected, thus simplifying STREAMS software upgrades. Technicians can also quickly replace non-operational units in the field enabling them to perform off-site repairs in their workshop. Other than a small number of hardware settings, configuration is stored either on the local site identifier or on the STREAMS server. This means that spare field processors with a standard configuration can be ready to substitute into the field as required.
