STREAMS offers vehicle
priority and signal pre-emption for public transport, VIP and emergency
vehicles. Vehicles are fitted with a Global Positioning System (GPS)
or transponders to allow STREAMS to determine their location on
the network.
If the vehicle is close to a traffic light which is about to change,
the green time can be extended to allow the vehicle to pass through
the intersection. For public transport vehicles, this system can
be linked to the timetable so that the system only activates when
the vehicle is behind schedule.
Signal pre-emption is set up to change the signal for a vehicle
that is approaching the light, regardless of which traffic movement
has the green light. This system is only to be used in emergencies.
